The Bottom End
The cylinder block holds the crankshaft in main bearings. Pistons connect to the crank through connecting rods, and cylinder liners press into the block to form the bore. The oil pump feeds the main and rod bearings through drilled galleries.
The Top End
The cylinder head bolts onto the block with a head gasket in between. It houses the intake/exhaust valves, rocker arms, and on most engines the injectors. The camshaft drives the valves either through pushrods or directly.
Bolt-On Systems
Around the core: fuel injection pump and injectors on one side, turbocharger and exhaust manifold on the hot side, water pump and thermostat at the front, and the oil cooler and filters on the block.
