Common HS codes for diesel engine parts

The table below lists the six-digit HS codes most often used when exporting diesel engine spares. The first four digits set the heading, the last two set the subheading; many countries add two more digits nationally (US HTS, EU TARIC, Brazil NCM and so on).

Part groupTypical 6-digit codeWhat it covers
Pistons, rings, liners, cylinder heads, valves, crankshafts, camshafts, connecting rods, bearing shells8409.99Parts suitable for use solely or principally with compression-ignition (diesel) engines - the default heading for most engine internals
Water pumps, oil pumps, fuel lift pumps, injection pumps8413.30Fuel, lubricating or cooling-medium pumps for internal combustion engines
Turbochargers and superchargers8414.80Air or vacuum pumps, compressors - turbochargers are classified here, not under 8409
Oil filters and fuel filters8421.23Oil or petrol filters for internal combustion engines
Air filters8421.31Intake air filters for internal combustion engines
Gasket sets and cylinder head gaskets8484.10 / 8484.90Gaskets of metal combined with other material (8484.10); other gaskets and similar joints (8484.90)
Ball, roller and tapered roller bearings8482.10 / 8482.20 / 8482.50By bearing type - check the individual bearing, not the application
Bearing housings and plain shaft bearings8483.30Bearing housings without bearings; plain shaft bearings
Radiators and oil coolers8708.91 / 8419.50Radiators for the vehicles of 8701-8705; heat exchange units for stationary applications
Complete diesel engines (not parts)8408.20 / 8408.90Compression-ignition engines for vehicles (8408.20) or other applications (8408.90)

This table is a starting point for export paperwork, not customs advice. Material, function, engine application and the destination country can all move a part to a different code - always confirm the final classification with your customs broker or the importing authority.

How to classify a diesel part step by step

  1. Decide whether it is a part or an engine. A complete engine goes to 8408; anything designed solely for a diesel engine typically goes to 8409.99.
  2. Check for a specific heading first. Pumps (8413.30), filters (8421), gaskets (8484), bearings (8482/8483) and turbochargers (8414.80) each have their own heading and are not classified under 8409.99 even though they are engine parts.
  3. Look at the material when two headings compete. A metal-and-fibre head gasket follows the gasket heading, while a plain copper washer may follow the material-based heading.
  4. Use the engine application as the tie-breaker. 8409.91 covers spark-ignition engines, 8409.99 covers diesel - mixing them up is one of the most common export errors.
  5. Document the reasoning. Keep the OEM part number, engine model and a photo with the invoice so a customs officer can verify the classification quickly.

Country-specific notes

  • United States (HTSUS): 8409.99.91 and 8409.99.99 are the usual 10-digit lines for diesel engine parts; a Section 301 additional duty can apply to Chinese-origin goods, so check the current rate before quoting DDP.
  • European Union (TARIC): classification starts from the same six digits, then adds EU subdivisions; duty rates for 8409.99 are typically low (often 2.7-3.5%) but verify in TARIC.
  • Brazil and Latin America: Brazil uses NCM codes based on the same HS system - 8409.99.90 is common for diesel internals, and imports usually need the NCM stated on the invoice.
  • Africa and the Middle East: most destinations follow the six-digit HS code directly; some require a pre-shipment inspection certificate listing the code per line item.

HS code questions buyers ask us

What is the HS code for a cylinder liner?

Cylinder liners and sleeves are normally declared under 8409.99, the heading for parts of compression-ignition engines. They are not classified as tubes or pipes, because the liner is designed solely for an engine.

What is the HS code for a piston ring?

Piston rings also fall under 8409.99. Rings are not classified as bearings or seals even though they control oil and compression.

What is the HS code for a diesel fuel injector?

A complete injector is usually declared under 8409.99; a standalone injection pump follows 8413.30. If both are shipped as a matched set, some brokers split the invoice lines.

Do you put the HS code on the invoice?

Yes - every EPID export shipment carries the HS code on the commercial invoice and packing list, and we can quote FOB, CIF or DDP so you can calculate landed cost.

What HS Codes Cover

HS codes (Harmonized System) classify goods for customs. Diesel engine parts mostly fall under 8409 ("Parts suitable for use solely or principally with engines"), with specific subheadings for pistons, cylinder liners, cylinder heads and other components. Filters fall under 8421, pumps under 8413 and turbochargers under 8414.

Why It Matters

The correct HS code affects import duty, VAT and customs clearance speed in your destination country. Wrong codes cause delays and fines. We state the HS code on commercial invoices and packing lists for every shipment.

Getting It Right

Send us your product list and destination country and we will confirm the HS codes and any certification requirements before quoting freight.
