How a Turbocharger Works
A turbocharger uses exhaust gas to spin a turbine that compresses intake air. It recovers waste energy, which is why virtually every modern diesel uses one. Holset turbochargers are standard on Cummins engines and many Weichai units.
How a Supercharger Differs
A supercharger is driven mechanically by the crankshaft, giving instant boost with no lag - at the cost of parasitic power. On diesel applications superchargers are rare; two-stage systems combine both.
Turbo Failure Signs
Blue smoke, oil in the intake piping, whining noise and loss of boost point to turbo trouble. A failing wastegate actuator or clogged oil feed line are the most common causes.
